About the Cows
We raise Jersey milk cows for several reasons. They are sweet, calm, and easy to manage; they are small so they eat considerably less than most dairy cows; and their milk contains lots of delicious cream that is very high in butterfat. From late spring to mid-fall, the cows get all the green grass they can eat. At milking time, they are fed a small ration of ground barley and oats, kelp, dried molasses, wheat germ, fresh garlic and minerals. It is really just a delivery system to get all those good nutrients into them, and it's a treat that keeps them always wanting to come in and be milked. In the winter, they get grass/alfalfa hay. Each cow is dried up 2-3 months before her next calf is due, so that she can have time to rebuild, and we can have a much needed break. Then spring comes, the cow has her calf, and we start the process all over again!
