What is a sex-link chicken?

The term "sex-link" is used because the color of these chickens is linked to their sex.  The females range from light to medium red with cream colored highlights, and the males are cream colored with random red flecks. They are sold under several different names: Golden Comet, Red Star and Red Sex-link are the most common. These chickens are actually a cross-bred chicken, the cross usually being a Rhode Island Red or a New Hampshire Red male crossed with a White Plymouth Rock, Rhode Island White, Silver Laced Wyandotte or a Delaware female. This hybrid vigor makes for a cold-hardy, easy to handle chicken that is a very prolific layer of large, brown eggs! If you are looking for a good laying hen with a good feed conversion ratio, this is the chicken for you. And, to top it all off, they make a very pretty flock of chickens!

 Our Pullets

Our pullet chicks are Golden Comets and they come from Mt. Healthy Hatchery, in Mt Healthy, Ohio. We receive them when they are 24-36 hrs old, like the little fluff balls you see above. They stay in our brooder until they are feathered enough to move out into our outdoor brooders, where they will stay until they are ready for new homes.

When They Are Ready

At eight weeks old, the pullets have had a good deal of growth, and it is a good time to transfer them to their permanent residence so that they have  plenty of time to get settled in and adjusted to their surroundings before they start laying. They will begin producing eggs at right around 5 months. The eggs will be "pullet" size for about a month, but after that you will have a hard time fitting them into your egg cartons!

2025 Schedule

We raise several batches of pullets a year with 200 per batch. You can take 1, 20, or 100. We will only be doing pre-orders this year, so be sure and get you order in before April 1st. Click the button at the top of the page, to see our 2025 schedule, then get yours reserved today!
